Progetto di Ricerca: Questa tesi esamina il rinnovato interesse per i mosaici delle chiese paleocristiane a Roma durante il XVI secolo. Dal Cinquecento in poi, numerose chiese antiche, spesso in rovina, furono recuperate e i loro mosaici restaurati o sostituiti, come si può osservare a Santi Nereo e Achilleo e Santa Pudenziana. Questa pratica si sviluppò anche in importanti edifici come la Basilica di San Pietro. Questa tesi esplora innanzitutto le ragioni religiose e ideologiche alla base di questa rinascita dei mosaici antichi nella Roma papale. Inoltre, questa ricerca esaminerà gli aspetti materiali e pratici del mosaico, una pratica in gran parte dimenticata a Roma dall'antichità, insieme a una riflessione sulla comprensione semantica della terminologia del restauro utilizzata dai contemporanei. In definitiva, l'obiettivo è esaminare, attraverso la lente del mosaico, la percezione dell'arte e della storia nel cristianesimo delle origini durante il XVI secolo.

Research Project: This thesis examines the renewed interest in mosaics from early Christian churches in Rome during the 16th century. From the Cinquecento onward, numerous ancient churches, often in ruins, were reclaimed, and their mosaics restored or replaced, as seen at Santi Nereo e Achilleo and Santa Pudenziana. This practice also developed in major buildings such as St. Peter's Basilica. This thesis first explores the religious and ideological reasons behind this revival of ancient mosaics in papal Rome. Furthermore, this research will examine the material and practical aspects of mosaics, a practice largely forgotten in Rome since antiquity, along with a reflection on the semantic understanding of restoration terminology used by contemporaries. Ultimately, the aim is to examine, through the lens of mosaics, the perception of art and history of the early Christianity during the 16th century.
