Short description: The project aims at establishing a Jean Monnet Chair on Ethics for inclusive DIgiTal Europe (EDIT). The Chair will focus on the key role of ethics to raise awareness about EU common values in the field of digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence-based technologies, that are essential for Europe’s future sustainable growth, cohesion and inclusion. EDIT’s objectives are: 1. to promote excellence in teaching in the field of EU studies on ethics and digital technologies, contributing to fill a gap in higher education institutions and in other levels of education, as well as in different sectors of the society (public and private sector), offering increased opportunities for teaching and learning (including professional learning) and improving the quality of teaching in the area of digital ethics, stressing the importance of ethical principles and common EU values; 2. to foster knowledge and awareness about EU values and the importance of ethical reasoning and critical thinking to the wider society, contributing to bring the EU closer to the public and to fill a gap in citizens’ understanding of the implications of the digital technologies they use, and of how to adequately use them; 3. to generate knowledge and insights that that can support EU policy-making and strengthen the EU’s approach to digital technologies as a global model, thus strengthening the role of the EU as a global actor. To achieve these objectives EDIT will offer a comprehensive set of teaching and additional activities, including communication and dissemination activities, focused on a human-centered and ethically oriented approach to digital technologies, that connects with but also goes beyond legal compliance, with the aim of embedding the digital transformation in common EU values and ethical principles. This new approach will strengthen European identity, foster participation in democratic life and civic engagement, and ensure equity and social inclusion in Europe and beyond.
