If you fly to Ancona airport:

From ANCONA AIRPORT to ANCONA CENTRAL TRAIN STATION
You may either:

  • Walk to "Castelferretti - Falconara Aeroporto" railway station - it only takes 5 minutes from the Arrivals building. From "Castelferretti - Falconara Aeroport" railway station, take the train to "Ancona" railway station. Check the train schedules on the website "Trenitalia": https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

From ANCONA RAILWAY STATION to MACERATA RAILWAY STATION

  • Take the direct bus (provider: CONTRAM) from Ancona to Macerata. Visit the following webpage to check the schedules: http://www.contram.it/Click on “Ricerca Orari” and digit “Ancona” in the string “Fermate di Partenza” and “Macerata” in “Fermate di arrivo”.

If you fly to Rome airports (Fiumicino or Ciampino):

You may either take a bus (couch) or a train.

By train

In Macerata, there are different train stations"Macerata" station is located downtown, where the majority of the University facilities is located; "Macerata Università" station is outside the centre (around 2.5 km from the main square "Piazza della Libertà"), near the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage and Tourism. While searching the final train station in Macerata, please mind where the destination is located.

North-south directions (e.g. Milano-Lecce train): train to Civitanova Marche station, then connection to Macerata station.
West-east directions (e.g. Rome-Ancona train): train to Fabriano then connection to Macerata station.

By bus

By car

  • Adriatic coast (north-south directions): motorway "Autostrada" A14 (toll road) – exit at Civitanova Marche
  • From Tirreno(west-east directions): motorway "Autostrata" A1 (toll road) ‘Del Sole’
  • From Florence: exit ‘Val di Chiana’ then direction Perugia-Macerata
  • From Rome: exit Orte-Foligno, then "Strada Statale 77 della Val di Chienti" SS77, direction Foligno-Macerata

Moving in and around Macerata

Urban transport service

APM (Macerata’s Multiservice Company) runs the urban bus service.

Schedules are available on the APM website: https://www.apmgroup.it/servizi/trasporti/orario-bus/

Tickets and travel cards are sold:

  1. at the APM customer service desk (via Pannelli,1)
  2. in newsagents or the “Tabaccherie” (Tobacconists). You can recognize them by their "T" sign.

Ticket prices for urban routes (update: August 2024, APM website):

  • One-way ticket: € 1.35 
  • Weekly travel card: € 11.30
  • Monthly Travel Card: € 30
  • Yearly student travel card: € 225

Please have your ticket ready before taking the bus; tickets bought onboard are sold for an extra-fee.

Extra-urban service

There are many lovely towns to visit around Macerata, such as Tolentino, the Abbadia di Fiastra, Recanati, Cingoli, or San Severino. If you wish to go to the seaside, the nearest beach is in Civitanova Marche (30 minutes away), while if you like skiing the closest winter ski resorts are Sassotetto (Sarnano) and Ussita.

The best way to reach these resorts or to travel around our region is by bus or by train.
