Extracurricular work placements
The extracurricular work placement consists of career guidance and personalised on-the-job training experience undertaken by the graduate at a public or private host organisation, at a site located within the Marche Region. It aims to facilitate career choices.
The relevant legislation is Regional Council Decision No. 2000 of 20 December 2024.
The placement does not constitute an employment relationship in any way.
For the placement student:
It is a period of training designed to facilitate career choices and employability during the transition from university to work, through direct contact with the world of work.
For the company: it is an important opportunity for exchange with young people possessing up-to-date scientific knowledge, facilitating the development of new talent who may eventually be integrated into the company’s production processes.
Initial contact The first contact between the University and the host organisation may take place:
- on the graduate’s initiative;
- on the direct initiative of the host organisation through internship requests.
Graduates may propose a new agreement with an organisation they have contacted independently, or consult the featured internship offers.
The procedure
Once arrangements have been made with the host organisation, the recent graduate downloads the ‘Training Programme’ form, which they must complete in consultation with the company tutor at the organisation where the placement will take place and in collaboration with a supervising lecturer.

| The procedure | Once arrangements have been made with the host organisation, the recent graduate should download the ‘Training Programme’ form, which must be completed in consultation with the company tutor at the organisation where the work placement will take place and in collaboration with a supervising lecturer (chosen by the graduate themselves); The form must be completed in full and signed by all parties involved (host organisation, company tutor, intern, academic tutor and organising body). Each intern must use the forms provided by the Marche Region, available at this link. At least 15 days before the start of the placement, the following documents must be submitted to the Placement Office of the Knowledge Enhancement and Social Impact Unit:
At least one day before the start date stated in the training programme, the forms duly authorised by the Vice-Chancellor will be returned to the relevant individuals. The documents, whether originals or copies, must not contain any alterations that could compromise their legal validity (e.g. erasures, the use of correction fluid, abrasions or tampering of any kind). Such documents WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Please use the designated form for any amendments. Extracurricular work placements normally last for 6 months, including any extensions. Requests for an extension, subject to compliance with the maximum duration of the work placement set out above, must be duly justified. Such requests are assessed by the organising body and agreed with the host organisation and the work placement student, in line with the training objectives set out in the PFI and the results already achieved. The minimum duration of the work placement must not be less than two months. |
| The host organisation | The term ‘host organisation’ refers to any natural or legal person, whether public or private, at which the placement takes place: companies, foundations, associations, professional practices, public bodies, self-employed professionals, and small business owners, even those without employees. To host trainees at its premises, the host organisation must enter into a Training and Guidance Placement Agreement with the University of Macerata. For extracurricular placements, the host organisation must, within 24 hours of the start of the placement, submit the mandatory notification (UNILAV) of the commencement of the placement to the relevant service within whose territorial jurisdiction the place of work is located. |
| The agreement | The agreement is the document that formally establishes the relationship between the organising body (the University) and the host organisation. The agreement sets out the rights and obligations of each of the parties involved, the rules governing the placement, the measures relating to health and safety at work, and the provisions regarding the participation allowance. The agreement must be signed by the legal representative of the host organisation, or by their delegate, failing which the agreement shall be null and void, and sent by certified email (PEC) to the following address: ateneo@pec.unimc.it |
| The training programme | The Individual Training Plan contains all the information required to put the agreement entered into with each host organisation into practice and formalises the commitment that the parties involved in the work placement (the graduate, the company tutor, the academic tutor, the host organisation and the University) mutually undertake by signing the plan. Insurance cover applies to the location and duration of the placement as specified in the plan, and to risks associated with carrying out the work from the intern’s home, where remote work is arranged. To ensure the project’s validity, it is recommended that the training project be completed accurately in its entirety, and in particular: Please specify in Section D ‘host organisation’ whether the work placement involves travel or temporary transfers to other sites or branches: in such cases, the host organisation is required to give prior written notice, using the appropriate form, of any transfer or travel undertaken by the work placement student. |
| The tutors | The academic tutor is responsible for agreeing, with the tutor from the host organisation, on the content and arrangements for the training programme before the placement begins; at the end of the placement, they verify that it corresponds to the objectives set out in the training programme and sign the skills certification form. It is the responsibility of the recent graduate to identify their own tutor, choosing from among the University’s academic staff. When verifying that the objectives of the work placement are consistent with the graduate’s study programme, the academic tutor must sign the training programme. The company tutor is responsible for placing the intern with the host organisation, which selects the intern from amongst its own staff. They are tasked with setting out, in agreement with the academic tutor and the graduate, the training objectives and the arrangements for the placement before it begins; they then sign the skills certification form. |
