Magna Charta Universitatum 2020

The Magna Charta Universitatum is a fundamental document for university autonomy and academic freedom, first signed in 1988 in Bologna on the  occasion of the 900th anniversary of the University of Bologna by Rectors of universities from around the world.

The fundamental principles contained in the document are:

  • University autonomy: universities must be free from political and economic influences to ensure the quality of research and teaching.
  • Freedom of research and teaching: knowledge must be transmitted without external restrictions or pressures.
  • Indissoluble link between research and teaching: university education must be based on scientific research.
  • Internationalization of knowledge: cooperation between universities in different countries is essential for scientific and cultural progress.

In 2020, Magna Charta was updated with a new version, called Magna Charta Universitatum 2020, to respond to new global challenges such as digitization, sustainability and the social role of universities.

Together with more than 900 universities in more than 80 countries that have signed the Magna Charta, UNIMC reaffirmed its commitment to academic freedom by signing the “Magna Charta Universitatum 2020” (Academic Senate resolution of November 27th, 2024), after already signing the 1988 version.
