Mentor Club
The was approved by the PhD School Board in 2020, to be in line with the policies of the “HR Excellence in Research” programme and to offer guidance to PhD candidates as to how they can best define their own path and enhance their specific skills. The passage from a PhD journey to a career outside or within the university system is a delicate one. Therefore, a well-structured mentoring programme can be of great help to support the students in understanding their potential and aspirations and in developing positive and effective employability skills.
Although a PhD is an essential prerequisite for academic careers in most disciplines, it also gives a significant advantage in job applications outside higher education.
Following the reform of doctoral education (Ministerial Decree 45/2013), the core components of PhD programmes are interdisciplinary training and innovative approaches to research. Within the European Research Area framework, international mobility and the opportunity to develop applied research skills in a real-world context – in collaboration with companies, institutions, associations, and professionals from a range of backgrounds – also provide PhD students with valuable transferable skills.
The University of Macerata Mentoring Scheme is designed to offer PhD students/early postdocs support and guidance in a variety of ways ranging from research training to career advice and planning. PhD students have the opportunity to:
- participate in seminars, conferences, and workshops organised in collaboration with partner companies or other national and international organisations;
- take a series of courses aimed at promoting entrepreneurial and leadership skills, e.g. Laboratorio Umanistico per la Creatività e l'Innovazione (LUCI);
- take part in FindYourDoctraining events, which allow PhD students and postdocs to better understand career paths, to evaluate and make the most of their skills and academic network:
