FP.PNGThe PhD course in “Education, cultural heritage and territories” is especially innovative for its focus, shared worldwide in recent years, on education as a means of heightening an awareness ofour cultural and natural heritage. The European Union has recently adopted a policy of education and cultural heritage to encourage projects of heritage education. Our heritage is multi-faceted, including historical, artistic, archeological, educational and natural environmental aspects, and the purpose of the course is to train future professionals in advanced research on multidisciplinary topics related to the Human Sciences, using the most updated technologies of international scientific research.



The PhD course in “Education, cultural heritage and territories” has a three-year duration and is coordinated by Professor Anna Ascenzi, associate professor of History of Pedagogy (SSD M-PED 02) in the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage and Tourism. This course boasts the participation of scholars from prestigious universities in Spain, Brazil and the UK, in organizing this specifically funded program, in acting as tutors for the enrolled students, and in overall supervision. This course also  offers students a dual degree with the University of Paris 8 or with Moscow’s MGIMO.


 The PhD course in “Education, cultural heritage and territories” has joined the regional  “Eureka” and “Dottorati Innovativi” programs, whose aim is to finance doctoral grants released by local institutions, including the Marche Region, involving a double supervision and a period of research in various companies. The PhD course has also stipulated agreements with the following institutions:

  • DISTORI – Digital Heritage: an architecture workshop at the University of Ancona
  • The Architecture and Design School of the University of Camerino
  • Anfass Onlus – an Association of families with disabled members
  • The national community of Capodarco
  • INDIRE – the National Institution of records, innovation and educational research


The PhD course in "Education, cultural heritage and territories" trains researchers and operators to manage the educational complexities  related to the wide variety of cultural heritage entities, for the purpose of promoting the territory through a variety of disciplinary contributions, and hence to train experts in processes and services within the new cultural welfare.

  • Two skills in particular are consolidated through participation in planned training activities, such as specific advanced-level teaching courses, seminars and conferences:
    management (preservation and restoration; management of museums, archives, libraries, archaeological sites and study centers)
  • communication/educational support (coordination of educational projects in the public and private sector, with a specific focus on cultural accessibility and social inclusion of the disabled ).


The PhD course in " Education, cultural heritage and territories "  trains researchers to achieve a highly interdisciplinary profile including specific knowledge and skills related to educational sciences, cultural heritage, psychology and sociology. Other complementary skills are innovation (ICT, digital archives and digital libraries, digital preservation, semantic technologies, use of software for statistical surveys or data analysis), history, geography, computational linguistics (ontology, linked open data, access to digital content with semantic technologies), management and enhancement of cultural heritage, up to the study of statistics for quantitative and qualitative analysis of research data on large samples.


The PhD course in "Education, cultural heritage and territories" covers topics on access to digital archives, libraries, museums and archives in general, and, in particular, provides the necessary skills in using technologies and methodologies for analyzing massive data, and extrapolating, analyzing and relating heterogeneous data, structured or not, even on a territorial basis (GIS). This allows researchers to discover the relationships between phenomena and complex psychological and social behaviors (migratory processes, gender differences, sustainability and/or media impact), to integrate cultural heritage data for the social and economic development of the territory, to acquire computational tools applied to research in the Humanities and to evaluate the impact of the digital world on models of production, and dissemination and transmission of knowledge.
