Introdotto da una presentazione storica, il volume si articola in 14 capitoli di approfondimento che descrivono il famoso cimitero di Highgate a Londra, che stimola l'immaginazione da oltre 150 anni. I testi mettono a fuoco diversi aspetti: tra cui l'impostazione scenica e architettonica del cimitero, l'uso di segni e simboli religiosi sulle sue lapidi, l'interazione tra l'ambiente del parco e le rappresentazioni della natura sui numerosi monumenti, i significati sociali e religiosi -  del passato e contemporanei - custoditi dai numerosi elementi architettonici, urbanistici, ambientali, iconografici, le pratiche che il luogo ospita o anche proprio in qualche modo sollecita e favorisce. Vengono inoltre prese in considerazione le numerose rappresentazioni di Highgate Cemetery in letteratura e nella filmografia, come anche le modalità di articolazione delle stesse visite guidate che giornalmente, su prenotazione, lo attraversano. I testi scandagliano, in un pregevole lavoro multidisciplinare, uno dei luoghi più intriganti di Londra: osservandolo, interpretandolo e discutendolo attraverso una pluralità di paradigmi teorici che, proposta con piglio critico ed applicativo, fornisce al lettore una conoscenza  informata, complessa, profonda.
