Seminary Autumn 2022: FOREVER AND EVER
Cultural Dimensions of Weddings

The seminary deals with wedding rites in different cultures, religious traditions and alternative forms with a focus on their material and medial dimensions (Hirsch 2008). The connection between tradition, innovation and transformation of religious rituals on the one hand and the diversity of this phenomenon on the other have a comparative dimension that allows for a rich spectrum of questions from an interdisciplinary perspective of cultural and media studies, political philosophy, and the study of religion. The seminar elaborates the theoretical horizon of weddings and uses historical and contemporary examples to deepen the topic. Active participation is expected.

This course aim is to

• examine cultural diversity of weddings
• develop an understanding how stereotypes are constructed and at the same time questioned
• build an understanding of religious and secular dimensions of ritual
• consider the function of media in the wedding ritual
• elaborate the role of gender in weddings.

Film series: FROM COMEDY TO TRAGEDY
Gender and Religion in Wedding Stories
(each session 120’-150’ depending on the length of the film)

Before the screening: The Film screening should be accompanied with a short introduction of 5’ by a UniMC professor or lecturer.
After the screening: 2 students will comment the film (10’-15’ minutes) and formulate questions or a thesis about the film. Then all students discuss.
